{"id":267,"date":"2006-08-13T19:12:45","date_gmt":"2006-08-14T00:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/?p=267"},"modified":"2010-09-18T19:29:37","modified_gmt":"2010-09-19T00:29:37","slug":"novas-notebook-nova-and-barb-show-in-model-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/novas-notebook-nova-and-barb-show-in-model-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Nova&#8217;s Notebook- Nova and Barb Show In Model Class!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 12, 2006 was the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Association Breed sponsored horse show.<\/p>\n<div>\u00a0Last year Barb told me that she wanted to show Nova in the model class.\u00a0 I was thrilled.\u00a0 In just under a year, here it was time to actually make this wish a reality.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Barb had practiced with Nova.<\/div>\n<div>Jenny had trained Nova to be a model horse -stretch out and walk beside her (etc.)\u00a0like a good model horse should.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Barb and I\u00a0tried on the show halter the night before the horse show.\u00a0 Whoops!\u00a0 not only was it broken, it was huge.\u00a0 An emergency call to Teresa who suggested Dwight Hart might loan his show halter worked.\u00a0 Thank Goodness for Dwight.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The morning of the show, we groomed Nova with bath and special lotions\/potions for her mane and tail.\u00a0Nova didn&#8217;t care for the bathing part.\u00a0 In fact she nipped me in a &#8220;tender place&#8221; while I was holding her for Barb to spray her with water.\u00a0That was a first for me!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>We shaved her excess hair to make her ears and muzzle\u00a0look beautiful.\u00a0 Nova didn&#8217;t much care for the entire morning grooming procedure, but at least there were no more nips on tender places.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>One of the young stall cleaners and horse owners at Pine Dell walked by Nova at the wrong time.\u00a0 She was forced to admit that she knew how to braid. Kerri braided Nova&#8217;s entire mane and tail. Thank Goodness for Kerri!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Barb told me that she looked a the show bill and there were two model classes&#8230;stock horse and saddle horse. We decided that Nova fit into saddle horse.\u00a0 This was our first clue that we might be competing with horses other than Missouri Fox Trotters, but we ignored that clue.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Barb got to the park early to reserve a shady space. I came later with Nova.\u00a0 I knew she wouldn&#8217;t want to stand tied to the trailer\u00a0too long by herself.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>We parked and I found Dwight right off.\u00a0 I took the show halter and we tried it on Nova.\u00a0 It looked good to us.\u00a0 Barb decided to talk a practice walk with Nova.\u00a0 Bobbie Bedsworth stopped Barb and proceeded to fit the show halter like it should be.\u00a0 Thank Goodness for Bobbie!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>We took off the show halter and tied Nova to the trailer.\u00a0 Whoops!\u00a0 Nova kicked her water bucket and got mud on both front feet.\u00a0 I had to get a wet rag and wash her feet and pick the mud out of her hooves.\u00a0 She didn&#8217;t get a new water bucket.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Now it was time to unbraid her lovely mane and tail.\u00a0 We decided that there was TOO much curl in her mane.\u00a0 We debated on what to do.\u00a0 Barb Parent said, &#8220;Just comb it with water.&#8221;\u00a0 How practical\u00a0was that.\u00a0 Well, OK.\u00a0 That was better.\u00a0 Thank Goodness for Barb Parent!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Now it was time to put the ribbons in her hair.\u00a0 I discovered only one twisty tie and no rubber bands.\u00a0 Whoops, I had forgot to tell Barb to bring the rubber bands. I managed to get the ribbon in her mane with the twisty tie, but there are two ribbons.\u00a0 I went next door and discovered Larry Kilroy was eager to help.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t know the method of braiding just a tiny bit of hair in the forelock and attach the ribbon with a twisty tie.\u00a0 Not only did Larry provide the rubber band and the twisty tie, but he braided the small piece of forelock hair and anchored the ribbon.\u00a0 Larry was getting ready to present the Missouri Fox Trotter flag in the opening ceremony.\u00a0 How nice of him to take the time to help.\u00a0 Thank Goodness for Larry!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>I&#8217;ve hated attaching the ribbons since\u00a0my very first ribbon attaching experience.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t braid&#8230;people with a dose of carpal tunnel syndrome can&#8217;t\u00a0move little bits of hair for more than a moment.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Nearly Show Time&#8230;Barb got dressed.\u00a0 She looked in the arena and noticed other grooms were walking the model horse around the arena.\u00a0 It was suggested that Nova&#8217;s groom do the same.\u00a0 Susan, the groom, took Nova into the arena.\u00a0 Did I mention that it was hot?\u00a0 We walked around the arena twice.\u00a0 Nova started nickering, but she wasn&#8217;t upset.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve seen young model horses taken into the arena screaming and out of control..but not Nova.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Thank goodness Jenny appeared.\u00a0 Barb was mightily RELIEVED to have coach Jenny on hand.\u00a0 I was called out of the arena.\u00a0 I handed Nova to Jenny and took off to get my camera.\u00a0 Not only was I the groom, but also the photographer!<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Show Time&#8230;Big Beautiful Arabians appeared at the gate.\u00a0 The gate opened and the first contestant with her big beautiful Arabian horse RAN INTO the ARENA.\u00a0 They didn&#8217;t stop until they got to the other end of the arena.\u00a0 &#8220;GOOD GOD!&#8221;\u00a0 I thought. &#8220;That Woman is RUNNING!&#8221;\u00a0 I might add that all the other competitors\u00a0had Arabian horses and were YOUNG (like 30 and under &#8211;\u00a0they could probably run in the heat without any fear of dying.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Did I mention that it was hot and humid this day?<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The next contestant got ready to enter.\u00a0 The ringman told the contestant that they were to walk halfway down the long stretch and run to the end.\u00a0 The announcer told the crowd. Barb walked as fast as she could to the half way point.\u00a0 She was praying the entire way that Nova would run when it was time.\u00a0 Miracle&#8230;Nova trotted right with Barb down to the end.\u00a0 I was shocked.\u00a0 Turns out that was the etc. that Jenny practiced with Nova. She did get a ribbon.\u00a0 The Pine Dell crowd let out a mighty cheer when Barb&#8217;s number was called.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Nova was the youngest horse in the arena.\u00a0 What a great experience for her. She did great!
