{"id":6021,"date":"2019-10-31T20:05:19","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T01:05:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/?p=6021"},"modified":"2021-01-16T19:14:09","modified_gmt":"2021-01-17T01:14:09","slug":"fancys-spur-refinement-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/fancys-spur-refinement-lesson\/","title":{"rendered":"Fancy\u2019s Spur Refinement Horsemanship Lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><br>Early Susan spur rule, in effect at least 18 years before Fancy was born:&nbsp;&nbsp;Don\u2019t use spurs until you can ride bareback with spurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation into English:&nbsp;&nbsp;Humans should not achieve balance while riding by holding on with the legs and feet.&nbsp;&nbsp;When becoming unbalanced on a horse, one should not clamp the horse\u2019s body with a spur death grip.&nbsp;&nbsp;It might end in a condition called run-away-horse-dumped-rider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your favorite rider, me, adhered to that rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fancy is much more advanced in her spur rule:&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cDo not touch me with your spurs.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;She is teaching me how to NOT use my spurs.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fancy is teaching Horsemanship \u201cSpur Finesse\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do not bump my sides accidentally with the spurs when riding.<\/li><li>Learn how to use your calves for lateral moves.<\/li><li>Learn how to use the inside of your boot heels for lateral moves, if calves don\u2019t work.<\/li><li>Learn how to shift your body weight for lateral moves<\/li><li>Where is your FOCUS!&nbsp;&nbsp;Use your belly button for direction.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don\u2019t make me guess because I love going to a popular dismounting spot.&nbsp;&nbsp;GET OFF!<\/li><li>Toes up in every gait means spurs (on the heels) are pointed down, not into my belly.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I do that stiff-legged bouncy protest canter, don\u2019t try to hang on with your legs\/feet.&nbsp;&nbsp;TOES UP!  Spurs Down.<\/li><li>Spurs are for lateral moves only.&nbsp;&nbsp;You do not want to ride a not-fancy 100% stiff braced hollowed-out horse with head up, ears pinned back and tail switching brutality. One spur at a time for moving laterally.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Spurs are not instruments of torture.
