{"id":690,"date":"2002-11-30T20:52:30","date_gmt":"2002-12-01T02:52:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/?p=690"},"modified":"2010-09-30T20:52:45","modified_gmt":"2010-10-01T01:52:45","slug":"jrs-journal-the-dentist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/jrs-journal-the-dentist\/","title":{"rendered":"JR&#8217;s Journal &#8211; The Dentist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When JR had his first general examination and fall shots as a yearling, the vet said to me that his teeth were great. &#8220;This is a horse that will need to be floated maybe never or once every 3-5 years or so.\u00a0 He has excellent teeth.&#8221;\u00a0 We were both proud. The vet. peeked in his mouth the next two years for his general examination and last year, he did float his teeth.\u00a0 It didn&#8217;t take long\u2026and we were all proud of JR&#8217;s mouth.<\/p>\n<p>A famous Equine Dentist moved to Kansas City and gave a demonstration speech and then worked on various horses during the Longview Horse Park Trail ride last October.\u00a0 My friend is a new horse owner as well as a medical doctor.\u00a0 She was fascinated by the dentist&#8217;s performance, the ugly things discovered in horses&#8217; mouth and the pain free result.<\/p>\n<p>She decided to have the dentist come to her barn.\u00a0 Perhaps she could get some of her barn people to employ the dentist.\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 She offered me the opportunity to engage the dentist and I jumped at it.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve been to two equine dentists&#8217; presentation before.\u00a0 I need no more convincing.\u00a0 Velvet has been worked on by an equine vet dentist specialist traveling from Lincoln.\u00a0 Our own vet now has a power tool to help float teeth while using the speculum.\u00a0 Life is good.<\/p>\n<p>Who would I take?\u00a0 I can afford two horses.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a given that Velvet gets to go.\u00a0 She never has eaten normally.\u00a0 She always spills grain. And, my next oldest.\u00a0 JR.\u00a0 Hay!\u00a0 I&#8217;m going to start riding JR with a bit pretty soon.\u00a0 He needs a bit seat.\u00a0 The dentist won&#8217;t find anything in JR&#8217;s mouth, but a bit seat is something that he does need.<\/p>\n<p>The big day came and we arrived at the barn.\u00a0 The dentist had just finished two year old Jazz.\u00a0 He had an infected baby tooth in his front teeth.\u00a0 His breath stank\u2026not that anyone noticed it until the dentist propped open his mouth.\u00a0 The horse before him was young too.\u00a0 He had some extensive remodeling in his mouth so he could chew without biting his cheek.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Oh hum\u2026it&#8217;s JR&#8217;s turn.\u00a0 The moment of truth came after the speculum was inserted and the dentist&#8217;s head light illuminated the inside of his mouth.\u00a0 Oh dear.\u00a0 I saw scar marks, chew marks and a big fat abscess on one cheek.\u00a0 His teeth were razor sharp and when he ate, the razors tore up his left cheek.\u00a0 The dentist vet said that he had started chewing up and down like humans do instead of side to side like horses do.\u00a0 Chewing up and down doesn&#8217;t get the food ground up nearly as much as the normal sideways chewing.\u00a0 Visions of colic leaped into my head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My perfect JR was the winner of the worst mouth in the stable!\u00a0 His cost was $50 more than any other horse and we are now thrilled to be on the 6 month schedule.<\/p>\n<p>The dentist said that she likes to see horses as young as 6-7 months.\u00a0 She can fix things then that can&#8217;t be correct later like a mild parrot mouth.\u00a0 The cost for young weanlings is only $50\u2026well worth a lifetime of teeth problems and pain.\u00a0 Remember mouth pain can result in horses dangerous to humans!<\/p>\n<p>The main point of my story is to have your vet put a speculum put in your horse&#8217;s mouth.\u00a0 A lot of regular vets now have them along with the power tools.\u00a0 At least you&#8217;ll be able to see whether or not your horse might be in a lot of pain that could be FIXED!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>JR now makes that comforting munching noise when he eats his hay.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t realize that this sound was missing before JR MET the Equine Vet Dentist!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When JR had his first general examination and fall shots as a yearling, the vet said to me that his teeth were great. &#8220;This is a horse that will need to be floated maybe never or once every 3-5 years or so.\u00a0 He has excellent teeth.&#8221;\u00a0 We were both proud.
