{"id":747,"date":"2004-06-17T20:39:45","date_gmt":"2004-06-18T01:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/?p=747"},"modified":"2014-11-22T11:52:52","modified_gmt":"2014-11-22T17:52:52","slug":"jrs-journal-gaited-horse-naturally-clinic-with-david-lichman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/jrs-journal-gaited-horse-naturally-clinic-with-david-lichman\/","title":{"rendered":"JR&#8217;s Journal -Gaited Horse Naturally clinic with David Lichman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gaited horses need to be able to relax.\u00a0 This is way more important in a gaited horse than a non gaited horse.\u00a0 A non gaited horse can pretty much trot even though they are nervous and upset.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the horses were very pacy.\u00a0 One of the horses was very nervous and upset all the time.\u00a0 She had a pretty green rider who was nervous and upset too.\u00a0 He rode with a bridle the first day and he hung on to the reins.\u00a0 The 2nd day, he rode in the halter and they practiced him letting the reins go loose and him relaxing.\u00a0 After that happened, the gait came out.\u00a0 This was a Rocky Mtn horse.<\/p>\n<p>The other pacey horses got to work over poles.\u00a0 The riders became aware of how many steps it took before the horse started to pace again.\u00a0 They stopped at that point and went back over the poles.\u00a0 One woman couldln&#8217;t tell when her horse started to pace, so she took a lot longer to get her horse to go into a fox trot.\u00a0 Another one got a\u00a0 nice fox trot for about half the length of the arena after dealing with the poles.<\/p>\n<p>JR is now a trotty horse.\u00a0 He was the only &#8220;trotty&#8221; horse in the clinic.\u00a0 The secret to stopping that is to do a manuever found in dressage.\u00a0 We trot along the wall and when he starts hard trotting, I asked his hindquarters to step into the center of the arena, but kept his forequarter on the rail.\u00a0 They call this, hindquarters in.\u00a0 The key to this is that you have to keep going the same speed.\u00a0 It works like a charm.\u00a0 Now he has become so smooth that I am doubting my ability to figure out whether or not it&#8217;s a fox trot as opposed to a running walk.\u00a0 I feel the little fox trotter bumps back there&#8230;just barely.<\/p>\n<p>We also worked on a cue to make them lower their head.\u00a0 Lowering their head makes them calm.\u00a0 Now when the horse gets upset, we can cue them to lower that head which should help keep them relaxed and able to gait.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gaited horses need to be able to relax.\u00a0 This is way more important in a gaited horse than a non gaited horse.\u00a0 A non gaited horse can pretty much trot even though they are nervous and upset.
