{"id":913,"date":"2008-09-24T21:34:04","date_gmt":"2008-09-25T02:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/?p=913"},"modified":"2010-10-08T23:21:41","modified_gmt":"2010-10-09T04:21:41","slug":"sue-how-do-you-do-trying-to-canter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mofoxtrot.com\/viewpoint\/sue-how-do-you-do-trying-to-canter\/","title":{"rendered":"Sue How Do You Do trying to Canter!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The problem is that when I ask Sue to speed up enough to canter, she tightens her body in fear and we go into that wonderful gait that only gaited horse people know&#8230;the gait where every leg is out of sync with all the other legs.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called anti-rhythm.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Transitions,&#8221; I thought.\u00a0 We are having a hard time with transitions&#8230;even when I ask her to speed up just with a faint higher level of energy.<\/p>\n<p>First I thought that asking Sue to canter in the round pen would be the answer!\u00a0 The round pen has deeper sand than the arena.\u00a0 It&#8217;s easier to get the canter.<\/p>\n<p>So, here we are in the round pen.\u00a0 We started out and I asked her to canter. We went into our 4 legged anti-synch \/rhythm stride.\u00a0 &#8220;I can&#8217;t do this,&#8221; my body said.<\/p>\n<p>So, we did passenger riding.\u00a0 The level 1 Parelli test includes a 21 minute passenger ride task.\u00a0 Sue and I couldn&#8217;t make 21 minutes the last time we tried.\u00a0 She is way out of shape.<\/p>\n<p>This time my strategy was different.\u00a0 We would have a lot of walk, stop and speed up transitions during our passenger ride.\u00a0 She would get tired, but we would have transition breaks. That&#8217;s what we need&#8230;transitions without fear.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what we did.\u00a0 We also spent the entire time going to the left.\u00a0 We veered to the right exactly three times and went right back to the wall going to the left.\u00a0 that&#8217;s interesting.<\/p>\n<p>I believe we made the 21 minutes.
