In June 1999, I bought Jim’s Last Request (JR) when he was 3 days old. I saw him fox trot at that young age. JR and I are meant to be a pair…our hair matches. JR is a strawberry roan sabino. He has a red dorsal stripe, four white legs, a huge blaze, flaxen mane and tail. His tail has a red strip down the center. Flashy and chrome are words invented for this colt.
JR’s sire is Jack’s Sensation, owned by a legendary horseman who is now deceased, Jim Hufft
NOTE: In June 1998 at the 3yr old futurity the IFHBTA (Trainer’s Assn.) presented Jim with a plaque and a trophy honoring his lifetime achievement in the Fox Trotter breed. Jim died a few weeks later on 6/30/98. Jim was transported to center ring in a horse drawn buggy supplied by Herman Hightower.
Almost six years ago, as a beginning adult rider, I purchased Velvet and Sage because they were fox trotters and because they were beautiful. I’ve learned a lot in those four years and have some idea of what I want out of a horse. I want a horse that can do it all: run, jump, spin, and slide. I want a barrel and a pole bending horse. I want a horse that will fox trot around the circle at Ava and look good. I want a horse that will take me down the trails in safety. I want it all. Sage and Velvet are in training to do all the above. JR is the next generation: a horse that was born with the athleticism necessary for a true versatile horse. JR’s dam, granddam, and grandsire can do flying lead changes. His dam has successfully competed with quarter horses at barrel racing. JR’s mother, granddam, grandsire and grandsire’s dam are all owned by Bob & Charlotte Blackwell. All have a natural fox trot and calm, tractable dispositions. JR’s sire has produced many many colts. All colts are natural fox trotters and have a nice calm disposition. This journal is going to be my record of JR’s progress from weanling to saddle horse extraordinary. It will have a lot of training notes and fun stories. |
